Lanzarote has a certain kind of flair amongst the Canary Islands. It is said to be the most volcanic one, which is supported by the many black sanded beaches and impressive volcanic craters, canyons and valleys, which started to be developed about 22 million years ago, creating a lunar landscape. The area is famous for its pleasant climate all year round, which makes it a very attractive tourism destination. The famous artist and architect César Manrique was born and lived on the island, where nowadays his house and a César Manrique foundation can be visited. He was mostly known for his deep connection with the nature, which could be seen in his work. He also had great influence on the development of the island and partly prevented high rise hotels to be built.
