The coast of Portugal, one of the most beautiful in the world

coast of Portugal

The coast of Portugal has never quite gone out of style. From beaches to coves and glamorous fishing villages, there is something to fit every lifestyle and every budget. Here we have compiled a list of unmissable sites on the Portuguese coast.

Duñas de Sao Jacinto, the wild coast of Portugal

Whilst the dunes may be a little isolated, located in the middle of the rural area of Aveiro and next to the Caramulo mountains, it’s beauty is unparalleled. The beach itself is closest to the city of Porto, which makes it a great day trip to make if visiting Porto itself. The dunes are not only a beach however. They also encompass a great variety of wildlife, most commonly different species of bird. Due to this, the beach is largely unspoilt and it is subject to development restrictions. So, if you are looking to immerse yourself in the natural life and steer clear of some of the more tourist beaches on the coast of Portugal, the Duñas are a perfect choice.

Nazaré, The Silver Coast of Portugal

Nazaré is one of the more famous fishing villages on Portugal’s Silver Coast. It is actually named after Nazareth in the Bible and is well renowned for its expanse of beautiful beaches. Nazaré is actually more famous for surfing than it is for relaxing by the waves, but that is not to say that it is impossible to do so. The area also has plenty of provisions for water sports, not to mention seaview restaurants. There is also a quaint funicular that will take you to a view point where you can see for miles over the Atlantic. The view is spectacular and one that you will surely never forget as you travel the coast of Portugal.

Costa Alentejana and Vicentina

Located on the south-west coast of Portugal, this has long been considered to be a contender to the Algarve for the most beautiful stretch of coast in Portugal. It is often missed by tourists who prefer to visit the Algarve but you will not be disappointed if you decide to make a detour. The beaches are particularly rugged, with cliff faces that invoke the same landscape as the north of Spain. There are also several quaint villages that are typical of the coast of Portugal. Comporta is a great place to start, as it contains several hidden beaches, rice fields and a tiny village. The Aside from the dramatic beachscapes, the countryside mostly consists of plains where you can see rural life in full swing. Another advantage is that the Royal Family of Monaco regularly visit here, so you will be in good company.

Arrábida National Park, Setúbal

This is just south of Lisbon and covers an expanse that would be impossible to see in just one visit. From almost tropical greenery to perfect beaches, Arrábida is stunning. The Portinho de Arrábida is the best place to begin your visit to this slice of the coast of Portugal. The waters seem like they could belong in the Caribbean and there is a 17th century fort to satisfy your historical wanderings. Just be careful of the roads, as they can be a little treacherous in this region. Praia dos Coelhos is another option if you really want to escape from the main drag. This beach is quite isolated and requires quite a walk to get there, but it is worth it as it is one of the best hidden beaches in Europe. Here you can lie back, relax and take in the stunning scenery of Portugal’s Atlantic coast.
