Cantabric cornise The Green Spain

Cantabric cornise The Green Spain

Green Spain is the name given to a lush natural region in Northern Spain, stretching along the Atlantic coast from the border with Portugal to the border with France.

The region includes nearly all of Galicia, Asturias, and Cantabria, in addition to the northern parts of the Basque Country, as well as a small portion of Navarre.

The main native tree species of this biome are beeches and oaks. However, since the second half of the 20th century, in some areas (especially in coastal areas), native forests have been replaced by plantations of eucalyptus and Monterey Pines for its commercial exploitation in the paper industry.

The Pyrenees, which sometimes are considered in the same geologic system as the Cantabrian Mountains, were once included in Green Spain, even though the rainfall there has different patterns and the general landscape is more alpine rather than genuinely oceanic.

Laredo (Cantabria)
Our first stop on this trip along the Cantabrian coast bears the name of this fishing village that can boast of having one of those sunsets that leave everyone who sees them breathless. Because of them, because of its beaches and its attractions, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in this area of northern Spain in the summer season.
It is mandatory to spend a morning, an afternoon or the whole day on the beach of La Salvé, which with its 7 km of extension is ideal to rest or start in some of the water sports such as surfing, very common in this area of the coast. In addition, the beach has dunes where you can protect yourself from the wind. And after the beach? It’s time to go for pinchos and tapas in the old town known as Puebla Vieja.

If you have time that day you can visit Santoña, located just 20 minutes by car from Laredo and it is quite worth it.

Santilla del Mar (Cantabria)
We are facing one of the most beautiful towns not only on the Cantabrian coast but also in all of Spain. With a historical and cultural heritage that delights both locals and tourists who come every year to discover the attractions of this town. It is traditionally known as the ‘town of the three lies’, because it is neither holy, nor flat, nor does it have a sea and walking through its streets will be a most hedonistic experience.

For lunch or dinner if you want to give yourself a good tribute, elcachopo is one of the star dishes, along with the rest of the fantastic meat dishes. Restaurants that will stick with you on your way through the north!

Potes (Cantabria)
Due to its strategic position it is the perfect starting point to discover the wonderful Picos de Europa and the Liébana Valley. Declared a Historic Artistic Site in 1983, its charm will catch you from the first moment you set foot in it.
Among your essentials in Potes you should aim to stroll through its historic center, visit the Torre del Infantado, see the Church of San Vicente, cross some of its bridges, visit the Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana and climb the Fuente Dé cable car, whose wonderful views you will remember for life.
And what about typical gastronomy in the Potes area? Do not miss the mountain stew, the lebaniego stew, meats such as wild boar or venison, cheeses with a designation of origin or pasiegos desserts. Authentic gastro delicacies!
