The Spanish geography is full of surprises and places with spectacular natural phenomena. One of these special places are the best known Bufones of Pría in Asturias. Only the views from its cliffs already deserve the trip.
The force and creative capacity of nature never ceases to amaze. Its spontaneity fascinates even the least curious and is like an enormous white canvas in Asturias where you can give free rein to the imagination. Thanks to the orography of the landscape, the Principality is home to fascinating jewels: the Bufones of Pría. Located in the municipality of Llanes, specifically in the town of Llames (23 kilometers west of Llanes and nine east of Ribadesella) it is possible to access the place by leaving the car at some distance to continue the journey walking; a walk that will be worth it just to appreciate the views that from the cliffs of the beach of Guadamía shine for the pedestrians. In three points of the coast of the council the geological phenomenon denominated Bufones occurs.

There are those of Pría, Arenillas, Santiuste and Santa Clara.

TheBufones are cracks and open chimneys in the limestone rock of a cliff formed as a result of the erosion of the sea in the earth that connect with the marine simas by which the waves of the sea push the water with great force. This action creates on the surface spouts of water spray visible from the outside, audible from long distances, which can reach more than twenty meters high. When the sea is wild the sound of blowoff travels through the air far beyond the place of origin. It is said that it is even audible 20 kilometers or more away.

But it’s not just about this show. The location makes the place an idyll that can be complemented by making the route of the Bufones. With a start and end in Llames, of low difficulty and lasting approximately four hours, it allows you to discover other wonders such as the Pozo de Les Gralles, an authentic natural pool or views that will steal the breath of the cliffs of Guadamía with the Pienzu peak of the Sierra del Sueve in the background.

And how not to take advantage of the route to visit Llanes, on the edge of the Cantabrian Sea, near the Picos de Europa, with numerous beaches and a good conservation of its monumental heritage, which makes tourism one of the largest areas of activity.

Llanes
Llanes is the Asturian coastal town with outstanding historical monuments and notable traditions. Traditional fishing port, a plaque commemorating the 65 sailors who embarked on four galleys to be part of the Invincible Navy against England in July 1588. Founded in the late Middle Ages, in 1206, Alfonso IX granted the villa a jurisdiction that was endorsed by the successive kings until Felipe V. The town conserves part of its walled canvas and in its intramural space (historical center) important monuments are located, in case of:

    The Basilica of Santa Maria del Concejo (Romanesque cover, Gothic interior).
    Rivero’s house.
    The palace of the Count of Vega de Sella.
    El Cercado Palace (built by Bishop Junco Posada).

The current population is assembled on the former administrative district of Aquilare (Aguilar), documented before the twelfth century and linked to the castle of Aguilar. In the thirteenth century, the so-called Puebla de Aguilar obtains jurisdiction granted by Alfonso IX de León becoming the town of Llanes.

Forty sandy beaches open on the coast of Llanes. These beaches are scattered throughout the different villages that make up the council.

The traditions, cuisine and festivals of the region are famous for their color and history .

Caves
The council has numerous caves, including a site of archaeological interest in Nueva, and the Bolado Cave near La Pereda that also contains ancient art and open steps.

There are also several important cave systems, including

    The Las Bolugas-Caldueñín system, under El Mazucu
    The Rales system
    El Cuevón de Pruneda, south of Purón

These systems were systematically explored for the first time by speleologists of the Oxford University Caving Club (OUCC) and Speleogroup.
